Who Are We? ...snowflakes

Who are we, really?

When we're asked who we are, or who someone else is, we almost always begin with their appearances or their professions or their positions in an organization. For example, someone asks me who my best friend is. I would say, "She's an Egyptian-American girl with pretty eyes and a gap between her two front teeth, and she's very tall."

Read that description. Is that really who my best friend is? Or is that just what she looks like?

There is much, much more to who we are than just our looks. We're all just a bunch of different personalities put into different types of bodies and circumstances. Our favorite foods, our worst fears, our happiest memories, all of that is part of who we are. It's not about looks. It never is. Just because two people are red-headed doesn't mean they will both love potatoes, for example. We all could have been born looking just like each other, but we could still differentiate our best friends by how they act and what they say. And even if we did look like each other, our personalities would cause us to still look different from everyone else. Let's say we all have fair skin, straight dark brown hair, and green eyes. Our facial features are all exactly the same. Then, from among these fair-skinned, brown-haired, green-eyed people is a girl who loves doing hair and makeup. She would naturally differentiate herself from the rest because her hair would always be in a pretty updo and her winged eyeliner would always be on point. She makes do with what she has. What she was born with. What she does to herself is a result of her personality. Who she really is.

Do you see what I'm saying?

We all could have been born looking like that, but for variety and different types of beauty in the world, Allah made us all look different. He gave us unique personalities and put them into unique bodies.

Knowing this, we really shouldn't judge others by how they look. There could be diamonds beneath the dirt and you'd never even know.

Allah puts so many examples of life and reminders of Himself in what He creates. Why should we keep ourselves locked in our man-made homes when Allah has made a much more beautiful and breathtaking place for us to explore?

That's a completely different topic, but I will leave you with this: Every snowflake is white, but no two snowflakes look the same. And when put together, snowflakes can create a beautiful, beautiful world.

Until next time! :)
